Story

WE LOVE WHAT’S WILD—AND WANT TO SHARE IT.

Although consumers are increasingly motivated to make informed, responsible purchasing decisions, buying leather goods remains a challenge. More often than not, searching for answers about where a product comes from and how it was made leads to nothing but more questions— questions that, in the end, stand in the way of consumers building an emotional bond with their purchase. While the food industry is responding to  consumers’ heightened awareness with advances in sustainability and animal welfare, genuine change is still a long way off in the fashion world, where trends and low prices still outweigh considerations such as responsible production practices.
We aim to change that.

CERVO VOLANTE
Goodyear-welted deerskin shoes and and high-quality leather accessories from Switzerland—all made by hand to the highest ecological standards from hides that are otherwise disposed of.

THE HUNT
Every year, 15,000 wild red deer are culled to prevent damage to Switzerland’s countryside. Cervo Volante collects their valuable hides, so they don’t go to waste. We elevate what others discard—to show the beauty in what’s wild.

RAW MATERIALS
Wild Swiss red deer provide the essential raw material for all Cervo Volante leather products. This leather bears traces of a life lived in the wild: scars, wrinkles, and scratches attest to its authenticity. All our leather is prepared in the canton of Bern using a traditional, purely vegetable-based barrel tanning method that is free of chromium and synthetic pre-tanning agents. We make a point of using plant extracts sourced sustainably in Europe whenever possible, such as those derived from acorns gathered by hand in Turkey. The addition of various plants during the tanning process lends our leather an olive-brown, sand, or cognac color; iron oxide and charcoal are used to create our dark brown and black hues.

Where we are today

After performing an initial feasibility analysis and scouting for tanneries and leather workshops in Switzerland and its neighboring countries, Cervo Volante began its journey in earnest during the 2017 and 2018 hunting seasons. In each of those years, we collected approximately 1’400 hides, which were then transformed into high-quality leather products. Today, we’ve expanded to three different product lines: shoes, accessories, and winter coats.

Moving forward

At first we concentrated on the basics: handcrafted Goodyear-welted shoes and lace-up boots. We periodically introduce new models to our shoe line to respond to the shifting needs and preferences of our customers. One of the needs that we have detected and aim to meet in the future are sneakers that can be worn with a good conscience.

Our current, first-ever accessories collection consists of travel essentials, including weekender bags, leather tote bags, toiletry bags, and eyeglasses cases. Additional products will be added to our fall collection. The summer of 2019 saw the debut of our clothing line, featuring winter coats made from high-end natural materials and fitted with removable inner vests made from the fur of wild Swiss foxes. Just like red deer leather, this precious material is much too valuable to throw away! As always, all materials used in our clothing meet our high sustainability standards. The buttons on our coats, for example, are made of elk jawbones collected in the forests of Estonia and then hand-polished and dyed with plant extracts.
