With an innovative hand-wound caliber with a five-day power reserve, increased magnetic protection and a ten-year warranty, Oris caliber development is progressing rapidly. Also on board this time: the world’s most sustainable leather strap from Cervo Volante.

On January 10 in Zermatt, Oris launched its newest addition to the Big Crown series, featuring a distinctive design with a hand-wound, high-performance mechanical movement. Oris has breathed new life into the iconic Big Crown Pointer Date, an Oris evergreen since 1938. For the first time in decades, it houses a hand-wound Oris manufacture movement, the Calibre 473. Matching the handmade watch: our Cervo Volante strap made of Swiss deer leather, manufactured in a process requiring more than 100 manual handling steps, forms a beautiful symbiosis with the iconic Calibre from Oris.

Oris x Cervo Volante collaboration

Learn more about Cervo Volante’s future oriented collaboration with three Big Crown Pointer Date watches from ORIS. Each has a gradient dial inspired by alpine hues and a Cervo Volante deer leather strap in three natural leather colours.

Three questions to Kadri Vunder Fontana, co-founder of Cervo Volante.

  1. How did the collaboration with ORIS come about and what connects the two companies?
We approached the CEO of Oris with our story and the proposal to do something together. We were very happy when he responded positively and forwarded our discussion and proposal to the execution team. Together we created a special edition watch with a strap made of Cervo Volante leather. We also developed a number of accessories to complement this collection, such as a watch roll, a travel case, a shopper, to name a few. The successful collaboration continues with the Calibre 473.
  2. How can you see/feel the difference between conventional leather and Cervo Volante leather?
Cervo Volante leather has “living” surface, which means there is no sealing nor any coating on the leather. This allows the leather to breathe, to develop a natural patina and to age beautifully. A trademark of our leather is the “perfected imperfection”: the life of deer in the wild is characterised by struggles and injuries leaving scars and scratches on the leather, which make each piece unique.
  3. Why does Cervo Volante work with red deer leather?
Wild deer leather is the most ecological leather on the market. It is a local by-product of Swiss hunting. Until a few years ago, majority of the hides of the hunted animals were burned. We are upcycling and giving the raw material a new chance. Moreover, our raw material does not come from livestock farming like conventional leather. Respectively, no liquid manure is produced, no additional, climate-damaging methane emissions are generated and no animal feed is required. With deer leather, nature takes care of everything by itself.
